Croeso i Willow!
Blwyddyn newydd dda! Happy new year. I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas.
We are starting a new topic chosen by the children in Willow class. They have named it the ‘Pits and Ponies’ and it explores the history of coal mining in Wales. The children are leading the learning with their ideas informing their lessons.

We will be writing recounts of our upcoming trip to Big Pit and creating stories centered around a mine.
We will be exploring letters written by miners and write our own replies.
The children will be learning to write and perform poems, using the green screen to record their performances.Home Learning - There will be weekly spelling homework and comprehension work set on
Mathematics and Numeracy
We have begun the year looking at negative numbers in the context of temperature and calculating changes. Over the coming weeks will move onto mental addition and subtraction including money, decimals, fractions and co-ordinates and statistics. We will be applying what we have learned in Maths lessons to our topic work.
Science and Technology
We will be creating databases of Welsh mines and begin to create spreadsheets using Excel on Office 365.
The children will be learning about the formation of coal and create their own digital presentations on the topic.
We will also be using our programming in skills to code our robots and to create game using Scratch.
Through this topic the children will learn about the history of the mining industry in Wales and its lasting impact on us today.
They will use timelines to order events chronologically. The children will also use maps to find the location of various mines and learn how mines were mapped themselves.
Our trip to Big Pit will be a fantastic opportunity to experience the life of a miner and speak to a former miner.
